Changes in Service – for the Better!
[by Nicole Doherty, Director, Community Engagement]
Over the past few months, you might have heard the saying, ”The only constant is change” and while this is more than true for our current world, it also applies to the Office of Community Engagement!
Now, you might be thinking to yourself—I’ve never heard of that office. No worries, you aren’t alone. We had a name change. What you formerly knew as the Volunteer and Service Learning Center (VSLC) is now Community Engagement! Our offerings of programs, events, student organizations, and resources are all the same with an added focus on civic engagement and community involvement. Along with this, the programs and resources previously provided by Off-Campus Life have been absorbed into Community Engagement.
Along with our name change, we have relocated to the new Student Involvement Center in NUC 141. Our office, along with Student Engagement, Leadership Central, and Sustainability, are excited to welcome you to our new space this August. Along with this move, the Central Pantry also has a new home in NUC 151. We are so excited for a new space and set-up that will allow for easier access for any student, faculty, or staff that would like to use the Central Pantry.
On that topic, while it feels as if the rest of the world has had to come to a stop, the Central Pantry has still been going strong to make sure food is available to our UCO community members. Starting on June 1st, the Central Pantry was able to re-open its doors with summer hours and COVID-19 precautions in place. A food drive was hosted in July and over 450 pounds of food and hygiene items were collected. Our hours are slowly expanding each month and the Central Pantry will be back open at full capacity and full hours by the first day of classes. While there will be precautions in place in the fall (masks required, one person in the room at a time, contactless check-in, etc.), the Central Pantry plans to continue providing the same great service and resources to our students, faculty, and staff!
As we get ready to return to full capacity, we will soon be in search of volunteers to help staff, stock, and serve at the Central Pantry. Volunteer sign-ups will be available on UCORE under the Community Engagement page and will continue to count as both service hours and STLR credit. We hope that you will take some time to come see our new spaces, swipe in at our STLR locations, and continue to serve our campus and community!
