June is Pride month, and the University of Central Oklahoma enthusiastically supports our LGBTQ and allies community. Student Alliance for Equality is UCO’s premier organization that connects UCO to the community programs that occur during Pride month.
Student Alliance For Equality (SAFE)
Student Alliance For Equality (SAFE) provides programming that engages the entire UCO campus and community on LGBTQ issues through an exciting calendar of events, a distinguished lecture series, advocacy for equitable access and a discrimination-free environment, and facilitation of a variety of training opportunities throughout the year.
LGBT History Month
LGBT History Month is an annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history. The Students Alliance For Equality and campus partners host a series of events to celebrate and educate the campus community about social justice and civil rights issues related to the LGBT community.
National Coming Out Day
Each year during the fall semester, National Coming Out Day is celebrated at colleges and universities across the country, including here at UCO. This day is a day not only for LGBTQ individuals to come out if they choose, but also a day for allies to publicly declare their support for members of the LGBTQ community.
The Safe Zone Ally Program, established by the Student Alliance for Equality (SAFE) in 2000, is a network of faculty, staff, and students who serve as resources for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) members of the UCO community.
Safe Zone Allies work to create a supportive and inclusive campus environment by providing a safe space for discussions about sexuality and gender, as well as educational and support resources related to sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression. Safe Zone Allies serve as points of first contact to organizations and programs, both on campus and off, that serve LGBTQ+ individuals at UCO and throughout Oklahoma.
The Safe Zone Ally Program provides training programs throughout the year for faculty, staff, and students who wish to become Safe Zone Allies. Members of the Safe Zone Team are also available to meet at any time with individuals, organizations, and departments to discuss the Safe Zone Ally Program and to assist in developing outreach and support programs for LGBTQ+ individuals.
