ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

Dr. Dennette Derby McDermott is retired Professor of Flute and Coordinator of Graduate Studies at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, where she has taught since 1990-2022. She made her European debut in 1992 in the Czech Republic with the Czech premiere of Jindrich Feld’s solo flute work, Introduzione, Toccato e Fuga. Dr. McDermott has performed in the Czech Republic, Slovakia ,England, Canada, Honduras, Russia, Spain and throughout the United States, including numerous performances at National Flute Association Conventions, and also featured as a winner of the National Flute Association’s Convention Performers Competition in 1994, 1996, and 1999. In 2008 she traveled to Moscow and recorded for www.classicalrecords.ru, a CD of “Trios for Flute, bassoon and piano,” with Katerina Zaitseva and Douglas Bakenhus.

In June, 2015 her interest in Baroque flute led to the opportunity to participate in the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, (and again in 2017, 2018, and 2021), an intensive training program on historical instruments, where she studied flute with Claire Guimond and Jed Wentz. In addition, Dr. McDermott participated in the Twin Cities Baroque Music program (2016, 2017), where she studied with Wilbert Hazelzet. In 2019 she was selected by audition to participate with The American Bach Soloists Academy in San Francisco where she studied with Sandra Miller. She also participated in the Seattle Baroque Flute Course taught by Janet See and Kathy Stewart. Currently, Dr. McDermott plays Baroque flute with the Austin Baroque Orchestra, a period music ensemble that specializes in music of the renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods.

Dr. McDermott has been published by The Flutist Quarterlyand Flute Talk with articles on Czech music. As an active researcher, she has compiled and edited the only edition of the Czech flute sonatas of Jiri Czart published by Little Piper, Trio Sonatas and concerto published by Alliance Publications, Inc., 2011. She has also identified manuscripts of Jiri Czart in the Giedde Collection of Copengahen, including one of his flute concertos and sonatas. In 2016 after almost 17 years of researching, Dr. McDermott published the first Thematic Catalog for the Baroque Czech composer, Jiri Čart (Georg Czarth) A Thematic Catalog. Recently she has contributed to an update for the composer for The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. She has also recently recorded a CD of flute Sonatas of Čart on Baroque flute with Leighann, Daihl Ragusa Douglas Bakenhus on Baroque bassoon and David Schrader on pianoforte. Dr. McDermott’s flute studies have been with Ervin Monroe, Israel Borochoff, Clement Barone, Judith Bentley, Renée Siebert, Mary Karen Clardy and Arnošt Bourek. She holds degrees from Michigan State University (BM), The University of Michigan (MM), and The University of North Texas (DMA).

 

Dr. Douglas Bakenhus is the music director and conductor of the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony at Northwestern State University of Louisiana, where he also teaches bassoon, aural skills, string methods, and conducting. His music degrees are from the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University-Commerce, and he has completed additional graduate courses in conducting and bassoon performance at the University of Michigan. In addition, Dr. Bakenhus has been the music director of the Northeast Texas Symphony since 2002, and has held teachings positions at Texas Lutheran University and the University of Mississippi. He has taught public school orchestras in Austin ISD and Cy-Fair ISD and has made several recent guest conducting appearances throughout the region and abroad, including the Sinfonietta Bratislava in Slovakia, and the San Pedro Sula City Chamber Orchestra in Honduras.

Dr. Bakenhus has also performed abroad with the NSU Faculty Woodwind Trio in Canada, Slovakia, England, and the Czech Republic. He regularly performs in orchestras throughout the Ark-La-Tex region, including the Shreveport, Longview, South Arkansas, and Texarkana Symphony Orchestras. In addition, he has participated in the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute on Baroque bassoon, and has made recent appearances with the Baroque Artists of Shreveport, the Austin Baroque Orchestra, Ars Lyrica of Houston, the Houston Bach Society, and the Mercury: The Orchestra Redefined (Houston). He participated in the Twin Cities Baroque Institute in Minneapolis, where he studied with Jaap Linden, Marc Destrube, and harpsichord builder Ton Amil.
