Attracting and Investing in Top Talent

Niccole Miller, Ph.D., MBA COB Annual Report

Jason Clark, President and CEO, CompSource Mutual Insurance Company

President and CEO of CompSource Mutual Insurance Company, Jason Clark, established the CompSource Mutual Endowed Scholarship to give back to the Department of Finance and provide for business students interested and considering a career in the insurance industry.

What inspired you to establish the CompSource Mutual Endowed Scholarship for UCO insurance and risk management students?

As a proud graduate of the UCO College of Business, Clark talked about how much he believes in the quality education UCO offers, with so many opportunities coming out of the university. He wanted to find a way to give back and provide for future students, especially those students who were interested and/or considering a career in the insurance industry. Because CompSource Mutual Insurance Company is always looking for top talent, the scholarship was also created to bring interest to the insurance industry for individuals who may not have originally had the plan to get into insurance, but chose it as a result of learning more through the program.

What is it about UCO College of Business students that is attractive to you as an employer?

Clark’s hiring of so many UCO students really spoke for itself. He shared a couple of stories about UCO students who they hired upon graduation and who went on to have great careers at CompSource Mutual Insurance Company. Clark spoke about the drive of UCO students and how well-rounded they are coming out of college. He attributes their experience to what they have gained from going through the UCO curriculum and the quality that is produced. He believes the skills they learn at UCO translate to success in the workplace. His company has had a lot of success with interns, so the ability to continue to roll out more internship programs to attract students interested in the industry and also those who may not have thought about insurance/risk as a career continues to be a goal for attracting and investing in top talent.

What made you say, “yes,” to being a part of our Insurance and Risk Management Advisory Board?

As a prior finance major, Clark talked about his appreciation for the professors he had as a student who he still gets to interact with in the department — Drs. Black, Arnold and Ice. The ability to contribute to the conversation about how to make the insurance industry more appealing to students, including providing internship opportunities and scholarships, is something Clark appreciates and looks forward to. “The passion I have for the insurance and risk industry, it’s a no-brainer. I consider it an honor to participate, give back and mentor students.”

What are you passionate about?

Above all, Clark loves his family, who he said, “keeps me grounded; when I’m not working, I’m with my family.” He also said, “People inspire me.” Clark explained that was why the pandemic was so difficult when we were sheltered in place because he feeds off of people and gets his energy from them. Seeing individuals who come to work at CompSource Mutual Insurance Company grow in their careers with their talent being rewarded is something Clark said is incredible to be a part of. A competitor by nature, he also said that competition motivates and drives him. “There is a very competitive marketplace today, so it takes that competitive fire to succeed.” He loves using his passion and drive to formulate strategies that help his company to accomplish its long-term goals.
