THIS WEEK! ‘Holiday Wrap-Up’ Showcases Local Music, Benefits OKC Nonprofit

The Dec. 5 lineup features colourmusic, Sophia Massad and more; donations benefit Positive Tomorrows

Hear that? It’s the sound of a season-celebrating local music lineup for the ACM student-organized Holiday Wrap-Up, happening Dec. 5 at ACM Live Room at The Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma (ACM@UCO). Admission is free, but donations to benefit Oklahoma City nonprofit Positive Tomorrows are welcome at the door.

Colorful holiday-themed poster features red and green rainbow designed like wrapping paper as a background and cut-out images of musicians in holiday sweaters in front of it. It's an event poster for the Holiday Wrap-Up event. The festive lineup features ACM faculty Ryan Hendrix and Nicholas Ley of colourmusic, DJ and musician Travis Tester (aka Trav is Dead), Nicholas Poss, singer-songwriter Sophia Massad, multi-instrumentalist and singer Than Medlam (of Equilibrium), alternative pop singer-songwriter Sephra Scheuber, longtime guitarist Danny Hargis and ACM@UCO Executive Director Scott Booker, as well as ACM@UCO students, alumni and staff (full list below).

“Although it’s not the end of the school year, the holiday season feels makes me reflect on all the amazing achievements our students, faculty, and staff accomplished,” Booker said. “A celebration with our faculty and staff performing together is the perfect representation of who we are!”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; music begins at 7 p.m. at ACM Live, 25 S. Oklahoma Ave. (First floor; formerly Michael Murphy’s Piano Bar.) Admission is free and open to the public, but a donation is encouraged to benefit Oklahoma City nonprofit Positive Tomorrows, Oklahoma’s only elementary school specifically for homeless children. Requested donations include new blankets, reusable shopping/tote bags, laundry soap, new beanies, new gloves, and copy paper. Cash is also appreciated.

“I always enjoy performing with students because we get to actually make music together instead of just talking about making music,” said Than Medlam, a longtime musician and ACM@UCO faculty member. “Being part of the performance allows me to share art with my students on an even deeper level than just coaching the preliminary work.”

Student Involvement in The Holiday Wrap Up is not limited to the nights’ performances. The event was conceived, organized and promoted by ACM’s Introduction to Concert and Tour Management class as their final project for the semester.

“An ACM holiday event is such a fun way for students and faculty from all three ACM programs to come together as a family and showcase what we’re learning while supporting a great cause,” said Music Business major NataliaVeloz leos. “It’s exciting to have helped create what might become an annual event at ACM. It’s kind of part of our classes legacy.”

The Holiday Wrap-Up is a new addition to ACM@UCO’s ongoing Metro Music Series, offering dozens of ticketed and free, all-ages events throughout the year with the mission of exposing audiences to new music, cultural diversity, educational opportunities, our campus, and Oklahoma City’s thriving Bricktown entertainment district. ACM@UCO’s Metro Music Series is also an important piece in growing arts-related partnerships throughout the metro area, the state of Oklahoma, the music and entertainment industry and beyond, and is sponsored by The Oklahoma Film + Music Office, Downtown OKC Partnership, Bricktown, Hal Smith Restaurants, Exchange Music, The Wedge and Painted Door Gift Boutique.

Hip-Hop and Spoken-Word Collective The Space Program Sets April 25 Showcase at ACM@UCO Performance Lab

Text flyer promoting the April 25 showcase with address, logo, date, location and time. Mostly white type over a black background.Come out and support the collective as they put on not just a dope show, but a dope experience. Merch also will be available.

Formed in 2017, The Space Program (TSP) is a Black collegian hip-hop collective from higher education institutions across the state of Oklahoma. It creatively disrupts anti-Black, anti-Semitic, imperialist, white, patriarchal institutions that oppress Black people, through the creation and production of a hip-hop album, Curriculum of the Mind.

The name stems from the track “Space Program” by A Tribe Called Quest, which makes the argument that “There ain’t a space program for ni**as.”

The Space Program Collective sonically, empirically and ingeniously provides a new “Space Program” for hip-hop scholarship and praxis, both in the academy and the community at large. The Collective additionally provides for a community of Black males that currently attend, have graduated, or stopped out at historically white colleges within the past 10 years, who also identify as artists, rappers, musicians, producers, poets, activists, b-boys, disc jockeys (DJ’s), audio engineers, historians, entrepreneurs, graffiti artists, graphic and web designers, campus leaders, scholars, photographers, videographers and/or hip-hop collegians.

New generations call for new voices, and new areas of inquiry, and this is your notice that class is in session. For Dr. View and the Space Program Collective, it always has been.

ACM@UCO Musician and Singer-Songwriter Rozlyn Zora Leaves Fans ‘Speechless’ on Valentine’s Day

This Valentine’s Day, Oklahoma singer-songwriter and musician Rozlyn Zora proves that love is indeed what you choose to make of it. On Feb. 14, she’ll release her new single, “Speechless,” as she embarks on a spring-fling string of shows she’s calling the Makeup//Breakup Mini-Tour.

Zora, from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, is a senior studying production and technology application at ACM@UCO in Oklahoma City. She said she’s long had the goal to release a new song every Valentine’s Day, and the Feb. 14 release of “Speechless” marks her first milestone in achieving it.

The acoustic guitar-driven, lyrically emotive ballad soars with support of ACM graduate Heather Becker on piano and Oklahoma State University student Demetri Tsaras on bass. Zora’s lyrical style on the tune has been compared to Sara Bareilles — a high compliment, to be sure, she said.

“The chorus came to me in a dream,” Zora said. “Charming love songs are my weakness. After I released ‘Love’ in January of 2017, I’ve longed to release a song on Valentine’s Day, and ‘Speechless’ is that dream child.”

“Speechless” was tracked and mixed by ACM@UCO music production and engineering student and student worker Stuart Adams in the school’s second floor-studio. It was mastered by ACM@UCO full-time lecturer and studio manager Kevin Lively (Rage Against the Machine, Pink, Elton John).

To celebrate the recording, Zora announced the quickie, three-date Makeup//Breakup Mini-Tour, in which she and participating bands fill their setlists with love/hate songs.

“The tour runs three days,” Zora said, then laughed. Zora and Mandias (Shawnee, Oklahoma, resident, ACM student and indie folk-rock musician Kate Carmichael) lead the lineup. Special guests round out the show at each show.

Zora’s first stop is a free concert 10 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Rabbit Hole, 116 S. Elgin Ave. in Tulsa, where she performs with Oklahoma City singer-songwriter Mandias and featured guest Lauryn Hardiman. The next night, she cruises through Norman for a 6:30 p.m. Feb. 15 gig with Mandias and UCO-based rock act Useless Randy at Red Brick Bar, 311 E. Main St. in Norman.

On Feb. 16, Zora swings through Bentonville, Arkansas, to perform at the popular Bike Rack Brewing Co.’s Eighth Street Brewery and Tap Room, 801 SE Eighth St., Suite 61. There, she shares the stage with Mandias, Useless Randy and Fayetteville, Arkansas, indie-alternative act Makin Loaf starting at 8 p.m. Tickets for that show are $10 at the door and eventbrite.com.

The Tallest Man on Earth Announces Tour, New Project and April 27 Show in Bricktown

Swedish folk singer and songwriter Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man on Earth, performs 7 p.m. April 27 at ACM@UCO Performance Lab, 329 E. Sheridan Ave., in Oklahoma City. Tickets are $25, and go on sale 10 a.m. Central Time Oct. 26 at eventbrite.com.

The event is part of the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma’s (ACM@UCO) continuing Metro Music Series celebrating the school’s 10th anniversary.

Matsson is often compared to Bob Dylan, both in ability and vocal style, and admits that he’s long been inspired by American folk artists like Dylan, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. That said, he’s no folk traditionalist. The classically trained guitarist, inspired by English guitarist and singer-songwriter Nick Drake, has developed an intricate playing style using various open tunings.

His 2019 tour comes on the heels of three months of touring — both overseas and stateside — selling out nearly three-fourths of his dates on a trek spanning from Germany to the Netherlands and Massachusetts to California.

His most recent project is the five-part series “When The Bird Sees The Solid Ground.” Each song is a new, original studio recording that includes the simultaneous release of an accompanying video directed by Matsson. The ongoing project is produced as the series progresses through winter 2018 in Sweden and the U.S., with Matsson splitting his time behind the microphone and camera.

Beginning March 9, he’ll release a song and video every month. Solo shows in support of “When The Bird Sees The Solid Ground” are planned in select cities worldwide, including the April 27 performance at ACM@UCO Performance Lab in Bricktown.

“It’s like receiving a video message from a friend who wants you to see his process unfold in real time, the more ragged the better,” NPR Music editor and reviewer Stephen Thomson said of the project. “Of course, for all his stated love of imperfections, Matsson’s actual performance is a thing of refined and impeccable beauty.”

While here, he’ll also participate in a free, public Q&A-style masterclass discussion with ACM@UCO executive director Scott Booker. Details on that event will be announced closer to the event date.

ACM@UCO’s Metro Music Series is sponsored by Oklahoma Gazette, Exchange Music, KOSU Radio, ArtWorks, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oklahoma Arts Council.
