As Ning has ended their free Social Network option, many communities will soon be displaced.
Education communities are up in the air. Will they still get free service? No answers yet. So I am collecting resources, as you never know when you might be asked to get one started!.
BuddyPress – from the folks who gave us WordPress, the open-source BuddyPress offers hope for Ning communities – with some bonus features too! This page has links to BuddyPress resources such as importing your Ning members and support forums.

And as I was jotting all this down, I found a “live” Google Doc titled “Ning Alernatives.” It is actively being edited by hundreds of people. So no need to re-purpose all of that hard work here, just go read the doc! I was about to look into a few more (below) but go read the doc, it has all you need!
