Fall semester is right around the corner. One of my biggest focuses for the fall is finding an internship. When the Spring semester ended, I had two places in mind, but they both told me they would not know for sure until after June if their budgets allowed for an intern. You would think this meant I would get paid, but that is not the case. Both of my top choices, Cleveland County Health Department and Noble Oklahoma Parents as Teachers, require government funding and/or grants to function. With the economy in the shape that it is in, they may be required to cut some jobs and shift some responsibilities. This is exactly what is happening in the health departments from what I hear. For those who keep their jobs, they will be asked to perform different and potentially more duties than before, thus decreasing the amount of time they have to spend with an intern.
From the response I got, the Cleveland County Health Department is not taking interns this upcoming semester for the Child Guidance department. Fortunately for me though, Noble Oklahoma Parents as Teachers is willing and 90% confident they are able to take me on as an intern! I am looking forward to working with this program. Parents as Teachers is a program that helps “organizations and professionals reach children during the critical early years of life – conception to kindergarten”. They work with parents, train professionals, advocate for children, promote school readiness, and foster healthy development. If all goes well, I will start my internship in August around the beginning of the semester. I think this will be an exciting experience.
