I wanted to blog about the wi-fi access at the conference that I attended. It was a 4 day conference and the vendor always sets up computer lounges and work stations in various location throughout the convention center. There were approximately 7,000 attendees and as you can guess there are not enough workstations to go around. I never had to stand in a line or seek out a lounge area in order to check email, check my schedule or find my next class location. There was an app created by Sungard (ellucian) just for the conference. The only thing I printed out for the conference was my double-sided schedule. It was easier to carry between classes while trying to navigate to the next session or to compare classes with someone rather than pulling out the tablet. I never had to stand in a line or find a lounge to use a computer. I really think that providing wireless access eliminates the need for the lounges and workstations thus allowing the conference to have less costs involved overall. I could locate and walk to my next session and sit in that room, take care of my email and talk with others around me about the upcoming sessions. The lounges are few and far between and don’t really work well in getting people together.
